I think of my images in relation to paper. I’m drawn to what printing does to a photograph: the loss of control, the unpredictability of an office scanner, the texture, the dust, everything that moves away from an overly clean digital finish. My work is inspired by 1980s magazines and a more independent 2000s aesthetic, which I explore through cinema and music. I photograph subjects who remain withdrawn, quiet and introspective, avoiding direct gaze or seduction. Their expressions are often neutral AND gestures minimal. I ALSO PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE SETTING, WHICH I APPROACH AS A MENTAL SPACE FOR THE SUBJECT, AND AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE IMAGE.
